SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS
August through June
First day of school is Thursday, August 18, 2011. Annual training will occur Tuesday, August 9th at 9AM. Interviews will be conducted beginning Tuesday, August 2, 2011, and continue until enough substitutes have been hired to adequately cover the crossings.
The City of Iowa City is seeking individuals to perform crossing guard duties as substitutes for the following 12 locations (10 schools) for both morning and afternoon crossings. Applicants may specify a specific location(s) and time(s). Permanent positions may become available.

1 - Grant Wood (Sycamore & Lakeside)
1 - Lemme (E. Washington & Dartmouth)
Morning Crossings
7:30AM – 8:45AM, Monday – Friday
Afternoon Crossings
2:45PM – 3:45PM, Monday –Wednesday & Friday
1:45PM – 2:45PM, Thursday
Wage is $12.50 each time a crossing is worked. The time required for each time period or assignment varies from 45 minutes to 1 hour. A hand held stop sign and crossing guard safety vest will be provided upon hire. Applicants may indicate preferences for a specific crossing(s) and also morning or afternoon crossings.
Requires genuine concern for the safety and welfare of children, own transportation to all crossing locations, and the ability to work in inclement weather. Applicant must have a phone through which he/she may be contacted. Must be able to pass a background check.

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE
Central Business District
$10.25 per hour
One temporary part-time position available
Hours: Saturday – Sunday, 6AM – 2:30PM
Job Duration: through November 20, 2011
Primarily outdoor work. Performs daily ground litter removal in City Plaza and outer CBD areas. Performs checks for vandalism, graffiti and needed repairs. Collects and disposes of trash and recyclables in CBD receptacles. Performs maintenance of various site furnishings and tree grates in CBD. Performs preparations and cleanup for various events in CBD. Performs landscape maintenance including weeding, watering, mulching, pruning and fertilizing of various plant materials. May perform preparations for flower beds in CBD and various parks. May perform mowing and trimming of turf areas in CBD and City Park. Cleans and maintains vehicles, tools and equipment. Cleans and maintains CBD storage and shop areas, break room and office facilities. Operates trucks, power sweepers, scrubber, push mowers and cord trimmers. Uses and maintains various pieces of landscape equipment and hand tools. Performs other related duties as required. Duties are performed primarily in City Plaza and other CBD areas and various parks. May assist other CBD employees and Departmental staff.
Minimum education, experience and certification
Applicant must be well suited to outdoor work and have the ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks under adverse weather conditions. Previous grounds maintenance experience preferred. Applicant must be self-motivated and dependable, and have the ability to work under minimal supervision. A good work record and job stability is necessary. Applicant must be able to work well with others. Applicant must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

MANAGEMENT INTERN
City Manager’s Office
$10.00/hour
One temporary full-time position available
Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Job Duration: Minimum 3-4 Month Commitment
Under immediate direction, performs research and provides analysis of projects assigned by the City Manager or Assistant to the City Manager. Performs routine clerical duties including answering the phone, assisting citizens, and data entry. Collaborates with various staff members and department directors on assignments. Operates standard office equipment including a computer, scanner, calculator, printer and copy machines. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in public administration, public policy, or a related field required. General understanding of computers including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Interest in local government management and practices preferred. Requires the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in public administration or public policy are encouraged to apply.
